Spieces rapae

White Butterfly.

Thi pest was accidentally introduced to New Zealand about 1930.
It was thought to have been bought here in the pupae = diapause stage on the boats that bought cool store veges from England in this stage they can stay alive for 5 months.

A parasitic wasp awas introduced to help with controll as well as the birds Lady bug and a few types of spiders.

Pieris rapae is the only type of White butterfly in New Zealand and you can tell the sexs bythe no. of black spots on the wings the female having 2 and the male only 1

The life cycle starts with one egg being laid on the underneath of host plant leaf these are usually Brassica type plants eg Cabbage Caulifower and the like
this takes about11 days to hatch it then spends about 3 weeks eating the plant and grows to about 30mm in length. the caterpillar then spins a web in which it turns into a butterfly after about 14 days.In the cold months this stage can take 4/5 months.

Different areas of New Zealand can produce different no.s ogenerations per year.eg the warm north 4/5 generations a year and the cold south only 2.
