A magnificent elegant bird from Southern Africa and rare species for the pages on Treknature!

Size 30-36cm - Similar in build and size to a Laughing Dove, but with a long tale.

The bill is long, slender and down curved. It is bright red in color. The legs and feet are red, and the eyes are dark brown.
This is a species of woodland, coastal bush, riverside bush and well-wooded gardens and parks. It is usually seen in family parties, and this is a noisy species. It spends much of the time clambering around tree trunks, exploring cracks in the back and probing under the bark. It is conspicuous when flying between trees, with white flashes in the wing and tail.

Image taken from my balcony, in RAW, ISO400, Aperture priority and evaluative metering system.

Thanks for visiting!

Hello George,
Not one of your best as the background is very busy and the light difficult. The bird is certainly very elegant though with its red beak and long tail. I expect it's one that's hard to capture.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Interesting bird and beautiful photo with good composition and good sharpness. The bird is in the shadow George. I am sure that you can improve the lighting in the photoshop.

Ciao George. Good colours here and exciting playing of light.

Hello George,
On your balcony you didn't have the best angle du take a shot of this elegant bird. But as a brilliant technician you made the best out of it. And the lovely purple flowers try to steal the show to your bird..I don't mind. It just forces people to look a little bit closer!
Kind regards

Hi George.
What the pictorial surroundings are around your house. Nicely blurred flowers decorate the image so much. The thick trunk and tree branches underline an elegance of the bird excellently. Despite the difficult light conditions you managed to reproduced the dark colouration of the bird and tree bark very well. Best regards and TFS.

of this bird, with fine POV and appropriate framing,
excellent focus sharpness and details, the image
being againts daylight (en contre-jour) you

Hello George,
I do have seen these birds for several times in African countries, but didn't have the chance to make a good photo of them. I think they are very shy. So very nice to see you succeeded. Not in the best position, but a very beautiful photo in good sharpness and a good composition.

Hello Friend George,
what a gift for you. To have this beautiful bird is not that easy. I like the contrast of the beak with the surroundings, and it very well seen. The shot would be perfect id its shiny eye is obviously seen.
Such an elegant bird well seen with long tails and further enhanced with red bourgenvillea.
A nice catch.

Hi George
