Tibia fusus

We found this shell a few years ago in Mobor, a small fishing village in south Goa, India. Walking inland from the beach towards a lagoon we came across an area where a women was placing long sheets of hessian on the sand. On some of these sheets there were already lots of fish laid out to dry in the sun. As we were looking at the fish Ivan spotted this rather unusual and empty shell. It was 14 cm in length, including the siphonal canal of which may have been longer originally.

Tibia fusus of the Strombidae family, is considered one of the true conch shells. It is spindle-shaped with a long siphonal canal. It is a fairly common shell, but, given its attractive appearance, it is highly appreciated by collectors. Most Tibia fusus live in off-shore waters where there is plenty of sand. Tibia fusus's length (including its long siphonal canal) ranges from 5,5 inches to 12,2 inches. From Wikipedia

I’ve posted the ventral side of this shell in WORKSHOP as well as a picture of the place where we found it.

I placed the shell on black fabric and captured this from a distance of 10 cm using the macro setting on the G9 and a low flash with the camera handheld. It has been cropped slightly and sharpened.

Hi Ulla.
It is a very attractive godsend and you managed to create wonderful picture, even more – wonderful set of shots. I have watched all three shots with great interest. Excellent presentation of an impressive shell. Both pictures give a great idea about subject. Details are great, lights are perfect and diagonal composition is the most impressive. Well done and TFS.

Seems that those shells in a black background are very popular these days in Treknature. This one is a real delight, Ulla. Taken skilfully with the awesome G9. Bravo! Superb composition, colors and detail. F/7.1 create a superb depth of field.

Hello Ulla.
Simple but perfect and beautifull. Great model - perfect composition.Great sharpnes, details, light, colours and POV.Best regards Siggi

Dr Mehmet, our in-house expert on shells, would certainly sit up on looking at this picture of a shell you collected in Goa, Ulla.
It is a beautiful presentation you created with your compact camera in macro mode.
The ventral side of it in your work shop is equally fascinating.
If I'm not terribly off the mark, this is your first shell presentation and it is a winner.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Bless you dear Ulla, this is a fantastic capture, with a great bonus in the workshop! Tibia happens to be one of my favourite shells, but alas, I do not have one. Now at least I have a couple of perfect images, thank you very much for sharing these with us my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet
