[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of the fascinating things I discovered in the Sauble Beach/Oliphant area was this dune a full kilometre inland from the shoreline. The dune is capped by a rich little forest. Dune forests are found on stabilized dunes protected from the intense wind erosion along the shoreline. They are dominated by beech, maple and hemlock. The uniqueness of dune forests stems from the fact that they develop on steep, barren sand slopes that are a short distance from open dunes. Though thin and slow to accumulate, the topsoil of dune forests supports a variety of spring wildflowers and woodland plants.
