Coconut Palms / Cocos nucifera

Every time I went swimming on North Beach, Mana Island, I would look up at these trees and just marvel at their beauty and especially against the blue, blue sky. I kept thinking I wish I had my camera with me. So this time I took my little Sony camera along and got some stunning shots. I hope you like this one. I had more showing the beach, but because it had man-made woven sun-umbrellas and deck chairs laid out, I wasn’t sure if I can show it on TN. So I’ll add a workshop to show you what I mean.

The only PP work is to crop it, frame it and use the USM to sharpen it.

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) popularly known as ‘Tree of Life’, ‘Tree of Heaven’, ‘Kalpaviriksha’, ‘Tree of Abundance’, ‘Natures’ Supermarket’ is grown in more than 93 countries in an area of 11.85 million ha with production of 10.39 million tonnes of copra equivalent. Coconut provides food, drink, medicine, shelter and aesthetic sense. It sustains millions and millions of small holders of coconut for their livelihood. It also supports large number of coconut based industries and thereby the millions of labourers, both men and women are solely depending on this crop. It is associated socially, culturally and religiously in many parts of the world. Coconut and its products including coconut oil is consumed in more than 120 countries. It earns a good export earning to exchequer. It provides food, nutritional and health security.

The coconut is a palm, in strict botanical terms it is not a tree. It has no bark, branches, cambium or secondary growth. It is a woody, perennial monocotyledon and its trunk is a stem which grows to about 25 m and exceptionally 30m.

It has a single vegetative growing point (branching is an exception following damage and suckering is not reliably confirmed) but with a regular production of floral initials in the axils of successive leaves (after a preliminary juvenile stage) but, in marked contrast, there is continual constant production of new roots from growth initials at the base of the stem (bole).

It is found throughout the humid tropics, originally in coastal areas in the wild but almost anywhere when cultivated.

Hello Janice,

Your shots from Fiji are really good. The colors are excellent in this shot and the composition is very nice. Maybe there is a tat too much sky but that's subjective I guess. Well done & TFS!

Hello Jancie, Thanks again for this great capture from your trip. Great blue sky BG for these beautiful palms..I'm headin' for a three day on the Texas Gulf Coast this weekend..although I'm pretty certain it will not come close to this! Well done.

Janice, excellent and vivid colors; great contrast.

I can imagine how nice this place is; your picture is really inviting.

A pleasure to check.

Janice, I exactly understand how you felt, when you were swimming there... oh, yes, green, green palm trees on the blue, blue sky's background. I like this nature's combination too.
Thanks for adding this photo to one of my favourite themes! I am also glad you had a good feeling while taking this shot and TFS! Irina
