The Beauty of the Pacific

For you Red Greg

Donít you just love the view from the lookout hill on Mana Island, in the Fiji Islands? Here you can see the changing colours of the darker Pacific Ocean and the lighter, greener waters of the lagoon within the coral reef. And even further out on the horizon you can see more water breaking over more reefs. As you can see the weather was perfect, sun all day, no clouds, hot, with a slight cooling breeze. P E R F E C T!!!

Quoting: www.athro.com/sci/atoll.html
Atolls are coral islands that have beaches made of coral sand, and usually palm trees growing on little bars of coral rubble. The centre of the atoll is often a shallow lagoon. The island bit of the atoll is a narrow ring of land around the lagoon, with coral reefs all around the outside of the island. Atolls generally rise up out of very deep water. An atoll may be a simple ring of island, or it may be a ring of several islands around a lagoon.

Corals were animals that grow their skeletons only in shallow water. Coral reefs only grow in shallow water. Reef building corals have symbiotic algae that grow in their tissues and help them secrete a calcium carbonate skeleton. They can only grow in the upper 100 meters or so of the ocean where light penetrates. Corals are the main building stuff of coral reefs and are bound together and cemented by algae, which also require sunlight to grow. Since both the main building blocks (coral skeletons) and cement (algae) of coral reefs require light to grow, coral reefs can only grow in shallow water.

All I did with this photo is to sharpen, crop for TN and place a border around it. I definitely didít change the colours, contrasts or use saturation; this is as it is. Nature as nature really is . . .

Hi Jannice, good evening!

Again such a tasty panorama. Is that you making those waves?
I don't know if it is my screen or your picture but its too blue. I made a workshop. Let me know if it looks better on your screen.

Thanks,

Hendrik

Hi Janice,

The layers in this picture (formed by the different colors of the ocean and the sky) make this is a very good photo. I like it a lot. TFS!

Ahhhh, Janice!!! I'm stunned! Yes I love it! This is photo which I could admire for hours or months [especially in winter] :-) Postcard from tropics. Palms, coral reef [I've never seen coral reef, only on tv. probably nearest coral reef is in Red Sea - maybe someday...], sea and sky... And colours - real tropical, paradise colours. I'm missing holidays so much :-( And this kind of photos help me to survive!

BIG THANK YOU JANICE!!!

Hello Jancie, I'm getting things wrapped-up to leave, no time to comment but well deserved :-)

Janice, indeed, very beautiful.

Great colors and pov. I do enjoy the blue shades all around. Simple and effective - and that's not easy to be simple and effective.

Hi Janice

Have arrived back home after 14 of the best days holiday we have ever had. We need to catch up and swap notes!

Your images from Fiji have been wonderful. This one falls into the same category. The ocean colours are wonderful and it's great how they vary in the same shot. The palm trees in the foreground are lovely. Well done and keep 'em coming!

Beautiful View Janice,
Good detail and great POV. Well composed. lovely colours & framing. Good notes too.
Early morning rush!
Well captured, thanks for posting. Have a great weekend

I love the waves crashing on the reef, the green water next to the blue and the deeper greyblue sky. I miss the palm trees from my vacation in Mexico already, these are lovely. TFS Janice.

A peaceful, very peaceful photo (pacifique in French). Living in the center of a big city as Montreal, the vast horizons miss me. The big spaces where my glance is not stopped by skyscrapers are rare in the surroundings. So I apreciate very much your picture, Janice.
Thank you for sharing this natural landscape.

Have a wonderfull Sunday!

I don't know how I missed this beautiful shot, Jancie. It looks so inviting and serene. The different shades of blue between the sky and variations in the sea are breathtaking. Simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing this inviting place :-)

Aah, a lovely view...I can feel the heat.
I stayed on a very low island and din't get to the mainland and the higher ground, it's nice to see the pacific from a little higher. Great colours.
