From my backyard:

I present this "first on TN" to you, an 8 mm long Black Rose Sawfly (Hymenoptera; Symphyta; Argidae; Arge pagana (Panzer); Schwarze Bürstenhorn- Blattwespe; Hilotome noir et jaune). It sits on a newly grown Wild rose stem and slits it up with the help of a knife-like ovipositor. Once the eggs are laid inside the slit, the wound closes. The hatching larvae will later on gather on the leaves.

ID: I used J. Zahradnik, 1985, Guide des abeilles, guêpes et fourmis, les hyménoptères d'Europe. Hatier, Paris France. Also E. Stresemann, 2005. Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland. Elsevier, München, Germany.. Furthermore www.hymis.info/topical/topical.php?nav1=topical.

Photography: I know the black background is a problem, this comes from shooting in the evening with a flash. The temptation to shoot an insect that is "doing something" was overwhelming :-)

HI Dietrich.
Interesting photo of this specie. Maybe sharpness is not perfect, but I like your composition.
Have a nice evening,

Hi Dietrich,

What a superb image of this ominous looking insect, however i do not agree with Maciek about the sharpness?, the sharpness is more than adequate and shooting in the dark i know can be challenging and you have done a sterling job here, great effort here under difficult circumstances and well done,
Best regards,

Wonderful to see through a window into this insects life. regards yiannis

Lieber Dieter,
