[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Tawny Owl (Stric aluco) photographed in the New Forest last autumn. This particular bird is a captive bird, who at the age of 23 years is pretty ancient for a Tawny Owl, their normal lifespan in the wild being approximately 5 years.

Tawny Owls are commonly found in woodland across Europe and parts of Asia, and are frequently heard calling using the classic T'wit T'woo noises that many people associate with owls. In fact if you hear T'wit T'woo calls you are actually listening to a pair of owls, the female makes the "T'wit part and the male answers with the T'woo call.

Canon 7D, Canon 100 - 400 L
Pattern Metering, Apreture Priority to control DOF

ISO 200 Raw, it was a dull day and ISO 200 was the lowest I could go and still get a usable shutter speed to avoid movement of the bird whilst retaining good quality

F8 Aperture to give a reasonable DOF on the Owl with the background blurred out.

1/25th Sec Exposure ... that's what it came out to when I had selected the ISO and Aperture.

Tripod and Remote Shutter Release used to avoid any camera shake, especially at 1/25th sec using the lens at 285mm focal length.

Hello Miles,
Excellent photo in splendid warm colours and good sharpness. Great matching BG. Very good white balance. Nice DOF and composition.

A great pic you have posted. I especially like the DOF and BG. Your sharpness, detail and tight composition of the subject make a great posting on TN.

Hi Miles, long time no see.
What a beautiful portrait of this stately owl.
The details are incredible, and the light is just perfect to show off the rich colors and the intricate patterns on the plumage.
He really posed for you. Fantastic pose and POV.
TFS. : )
