Aeshna mixta ♂
Migrant Hawker, Scarce Aeshna

First up, many thanks to Paul (PDP) for letting me use his Sigma 50-500 for this shot - much appreciated! I must say I was surprised at how well the lens performed, this was taken hand-held at 500mm (800mm in 35mm equivalent terms).

This is a male Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta) on the wing. I've always wanted a shot like this ever since Bente/Milloup posted the first dragonfly in flight shot to TN, I'm glad to finally get there!

Migrant Hawkers can be seen from July to October. According to information I've read they aren't supposed to be particularly territorial, but this one seemed to defend his turf quite agressively!

In case you're wondering about the grey background, it's a small pond, the grey colour comes from the reflected grey skies above. Luckily the sun came out whilst I was shooting :)

Tech:
ISO400 converted using Adobe CRAW.
550EX flash in FP mode with stofen diffuser.
NeatImage, Crop, Resize 50%, USM.

Hi Adrian,
apart from good detail, colour and sharpness, the interesting POV makes this shot, with the X-cross made by the wings. Excellent!

Gabi

Hi Adrian,

A daring man to hand hold the "Bigma." However, you chose your speed wisely for a hand held shot. Excellent work my friend. Glad you were able to use Paul's bigma. I've got my eye on it for future consideration, until then, LOL

Sharp, clean, crisp, excellent exposure. Super work. Excellent composition.

very good shot and wonderfull colors

congrulations.. TFS!

Absolutely beautiful, Adrian. One of my favorite things about TN is the macro shots that bring these smaller wonders closer. I like how the the body and head of the dragonfly is shown as the important element of the shot. The blue segments are stunning. Exceptionally done :-)

Wow, Adrian... a stunning shot. The focus is so sharp. Hard to believe you took this hand held. The colors are beautiful, especially the blue that is quite vivid. I am also amazed that we can see the 4 wings so clearly and sharply. Great job, and TFS. : )

Hello Adrian!
Wonderful in flight capture.Lighting, colors, sharpness,DOF and framing are excellent.TFS...:-)

Brilliant shot, I know these are almost impossible to take and you have done really well. Almost perfect sharpness, incredible for hand-held. Well done.

Very nice capture in flight.
I really like it.
It's not easy to realize.
Nico.

Superb shot Adrian!
I still don't have such though I've tried many times.
The photo has very good quality and nice colours. Though it's difficult you managed to do it well.
I like it very much.
WELL DONE & TFS

Hi Adrian, I'm glad to see how well this one worked out, your patience was well worth it. Am I right in thinking you used manual focus? It is sharp, detailed, well exposed and the colours show up really well against that grey BG. Well composed and great POV Adrian. Nicely done and it was great to meet you at last :)

This is impressive. I have tried this and know how hard this is. Great shot, Adrian. The colors are very nicely done.

Hello Adrian, I found this from a link through the forum, I can't believe I had not seen it before...especially as it was with my lens! It's lovely, excellent focus and a typically nice Thursley BG.

Hello Adrian
I'm amazed that you were even able to get the dragonfly in the viewfinder. Fast shutter was able to freeze the wings nicely. Extremely well done.
Greg

Hey Adrian,

Great capture! Really fine and clear details as well as colours on the dragonfly! It's remarkable how you captured it in flight so clearly! Bravo!
