Tenthredo zona feeding on Rhagonycha fulva

When out for a trip the other day we saw some Angelica silvatica alongside the roadside. This is a perennial umbelliferous plant that grows up to 2 metres in height. The flowers are white and attract a large number of insects. What quickly caught our attention was this female Sawfly who was dragging her male around while she was touring the flowers and stopping every now and again to gobble up a Red Soldier Beetle!

This species belong to a large family, Tenthredinidae, with well over 6000 species worldwide. There are many look-alikes and after some research I was pleased to find the ID of this one by means of a German site.

The larvae are herbivores and feed on the foliage of trees and shrubs. Females use their sawlike ovipositor to cut slits through barks of twigs, into which translucent eggs are wedged, which damages the trees.

This was captured in the shade from a distance of 30 cm with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

In the WORKSHOP you can see the male facing a Soldier Beetle!

Hello, neighbour Ulla! How u doin', mam?
Today, you have presented a powerful document portraying a dramatic happening in the realm of nature. The female Sawfly, seemingly impervious to immediate business at hand, is preoccupied in devouring her prey while the male of the species lies passively on the flowers, resigned to its current predicament.
The three characters in this scene are in extremely sharp focus against the background of white flowers.
A beautiful picture in its totality.
Warm regards,
Ram

Hi Ulla,

You have a knack of being in the right place at the right time and managing a perfect shot! I'm not sure which is my favorite - the workshop is equally fantastic. The flowers are beautiful, the sawflys are magnificent and the poor beetle is certainly a bonus. Colors, details and composition are all superb. All is well here - Arizona is hotter and more humid than ever. We are also having an active monsoon season so the place to be is inside.

Jane

No destacaría nada en especial, ya que esta foto destaca por el buen
resultado del conjunto... de la suma de los diferentes elementos.
Buena disposición de los insectos y escena.
Un abrazo Ulla: Josep Ignasi.
