Nursery Web Spider - Pisaura mirabilis

This is a spider species of the family Pisauridae that is recognised by its slim, tapering abdumen and long robust legs. Abdominal markings can be quite striking but may be totally absent. Also the colours vary a lot. The female (12-16 mm) is somewhat larger than the male (10-13 mm).

“Males of this species offer food gifts to potential female mates. Some Pisaura mirabilis have also been observed to feign death, remaining still while holding the food gift in their mouths. When the female approaches and tries to take the food away, the male springs back to life and attempts to mate. The strategy of playing dead more than doubles a male's odds of successfully achieving copulation, from 40% to 89%. This is an example of a behavior originally evolved to ward off predators being adapted to a new purpose.” Extract from Wikipedia

This was captured at the end of May when we saw many of this species hunting in low vegetation.

Superb macro of this long-legged Spider, Ulla.
The green leaf serves as the most apt BG for this subject owing to its colour.

Hi Ulla.
Upper POV is very impressive and allows to show all features of the splendid individual of the species. Nicely detailed cute leaf is an excellent canvas for the photo model. Composition of the shot is spot on. TFS and kind regards.

Hello Ulla,
Even if I don't like much spiders, pictures of them seem always interesting. The shape and color of this species is striking, I think I never saw this one. Well composed shot, may be a little bit noise, probably due to cropping. Interesting note too. Thanks!

Hello Ulla,
An unusual species of spider for me, very well captured and presented. Best wishes.

Ciao Ulla. The best POV to exalt the perspective. Good detaisl and sharp even if in low light. Best compliments.

Buen trabajo con el espacio y los colores para esta bella especie.
