The Iris Glossy-starling, Coccycolius iris, is also known as the Emerald Starling. It is a small starling with a metallic green crown, upper body, wings and tail. The ear-coverts and underparts are metallic purple. Both sexes are similar. Its placement in a monotypic genus Coccycolius is disputed; some unite it with many other glossy-starlings in Lamprotornis.

One of the smallest species among starlings, the Iris Glossy-starling is distributed in West Africa. It inhabits lowlands and savanna of Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The Iris Glossy-starling feeds on figs, Haronga berries and other fruit, seeds, ants and small insects such as ants. The cup-shaped nest is built in a tree cavity.
This image of this species was taken in a bird park in Northern Johannesburg.

Image taken in RAW, ISO1000, Aperture priority mode and spot metering.

Hello George,
What an amazing metallic two-colored plumage this Starling is lucky to have. Most beautiful! I like the decentred presentation of your picture and I think that the grey surrounding is an ideal combination with the color of the plumage. As usual just great!
Kind regards
Anne

So VIBrANT! It's like the peacock of starlings! What is spot metering? This is a personal favorite, can't wait to experiment with this aperture! (my camera came in!!)

Hello George,
I remember seeing one of these little beauties a few years ago in a zoo. I was stuned by the awesome iridescent green coloring. I can only imagine what a whole flock of these birds would look like while inflight.
Outstanding shot filled with excellent detail and just the right exposure. Great work!!
Ron
