[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first time I have seen this particular butterfly around home, so I was just thrilled to get a glimpse of it. I ran into the house, grabbed my camera and headed back outside.

I kept hoping this little Tortoiseshell would give me a better look, but he didn't. I managed to get just a few quick shots off before it headed out.

Like it's close relatives, the angelwings, the adult Tortoiseshells hibernate in winter months. The abundance of this particular species can fluctuate greatly from year to year in any given location.

They can be found from S. Alaska to Pacific Northwest (rarely to S. California) and east to Newfoundland.

Hi Ron,

Wonderful composition of this tortoiseshell(Milbert's?) Butterfly. The orange in contrast with the purple flower really is dramatic. Good sharpness & an excellent POV for this fleeting moment in time.

Regards,

Derek

Hello Ron,
A fine capture of Milbert's Tortoiseshell butterfly, a different species from the European.
Excellent sharpness and colours with a good DOF and contrasting natural BG. I think this is a new one for TN: ifso congratulations!
