Weevils - Curculionidae (Latreille, 1802)

Hello Friends!

Certainly, the peace and privacy no longer exist in the small woods near my small town!

At least, that's what should be think this pair of weevils dazzled by the flash of my camera! ha... ha... ha.... :)

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Coleoptera
Superfamily: Curculionoidea
Family: Curculionidae (Latreille, 1802)

General: Curculionidae is the family of the "true" weevils (or "snout beetles"). It was formerly recognized in 1998 as the largest of any animal family, with over 40,000 species described worldwide at that time. Today, it is still one of the largest known.

They are recognized by their distinctive long snout and geniculate antennae with small clubs; beyond that, curculionids have considerable diversity of form and size, with adult lengths ranging from 1 to 40 millimetres (0.04 to 1.57 in).

Weevils are almost entirely plant feeders, and most species are associated with a narrow range of hosts, in many cases only living on a single species. With so many species to classify and over 400 genera, the taxonomy of this family is quite complicated, and authors disagree on the number and placement of various subfamilies, tribes and subtribes.

The word "weevil" has been made famous by the boll weevil, which lays its eggs and feeds inside cotton bolls, ruining the crop.

The phylogeny of the group is complex; with 40,000 species there is a spirited debate about the relationships between subfamilies and genera. A 1997 analysis attempted to construct a phylogeny based mainly on larval characteristics

Hello Jesús,

Incredible sharpness & detail of this mating pair. From the thumbnail they could also have been rhinoceros. The angles/geometry of the leaf stems create a special effect & the lighting is quite magical. A very pleasing & well composed image & moment in nature.

hi jesus
very good and sharp detail, interesting insect .

Hi Jesus,

The weevils are looking in extreme mood of love. You've captured the scene very well with pin sharp details & good POV.
The colors & composition is nice. A great macro shot!
Well done & TFS.

OH THIS IS HYSTERICAL!!!!!!! and gives weevils a whole new ..(i am at a loss for words) LOLOL as always jesus..FANTASTIC

Well done, I've never seen one of these critters before.

Amazing scene Jesus! Excellent photo as always.

Even without a dedicated macro lens the result here seems pretty convincing, friend Jesus Linares, spectacular in fact. Without intervening with the privacy of the busy couple the moment is perfectly well documented. Superb point of view. Superb brightness, moderate contrast and fine silky smooth out of focus background, colors to die for and a .... white balance which looks fine even for strangers from the other site of the world ;)Bravo...bravo!

Hola Jesus,
a great picture of these exotic beetles. This time, I cannot help in species identification.
I must confess that I have already great difficulties with the 800 German wheevils.
The species number of Curculionidae world-wide is now estimated tob greater than 60.000.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Jesus,
fantastic shot and superb focus. The POV is perfect and also the composition. Excellently presented.

These are the most unique looking Weevils I have ever seen, Jesus. Sort of spiky but very cute.
You out-do yourself in this macro. Fantastic use of flash to reveal the insects enjoying their private moment. The details on every part of them are simply mind blowing.
Best regards.
