[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Normally we place photos on TN of healthy beautiful animals. But being a Nature website apart from photographic requisites, I decided to bring you one of my most emotional moments in the wild.

Harsh Africa
We found this lioness near the Nebrowni waterhole in Etosha. One of the game rangers told us that she left the Pride about a week before.
A Lioness will only leave the Lion-Pride permanently if she feels that she can no longer contribute to the well being of the group due to age, sickness or an injury sustained during a hunt or fight.
Being a proud animal, she accepts her fate alone. In this condition, she is vulnerable to attacks by her Eternal enemy, Hyenas. If she survives long enough, she will sought a quite spot and lay down her once magnificent head for the last time.

It is an emotional sacrifice of a proud animal. Once, a successful hunter, proud mother of cubs and an integral member of the Lion-Pride, she is now degraded to what you see.
We followed her for the next few days but eventually she disappeared.
Apart from "cropping" and a bit of "sharpening" this is the original exposure.

Hallo Carl,
Dat is inderdaad schrikken wanneer je zo'n beest zo ziet lijden. Wat is die mager!
Maar het is een prachtige foto in schitterend licht en uitstekende scherpte.
Vriendelijke Groeten,

Ciao Carl, great capture of superb creature, wonderful warm colors and splendid sharpness, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

hallo Carl
Dit is de ander wereld van de natuur
Je hebt hem er wel erg goed opstaan zo op de rots met veel details
Super scherp en goed van kleur

bedankt groetjes lou

oh it is emotional..harsh nature indeed. This one made me tear up...

Hello Carl,
Certainly looks to me, this lioness must be injured or something and unable to hunt for herself and look doomed to die, I have seen this happen on natural geographic channel, A very well captured!
Thanks for sharing and have a great evening,
Best Regards,

Hi Carl,

Wow what a really sad situation of this Lionesses fate, and suppose that this is the way of nature's call, very emotional indeed, all i can say is a quality image and a very sad note...,
Best Regards,

Hallo Carl,
Inderdaad baie emosioneel - beide jou foto en nota. Uitstaande gehalte en 'n baie goeie bydrae hier. Groete.

A sad story but a beautiful photo Carl! Excellent composition, wonderful colours and great sharpness.

what an emotional and powerful image Carl...we have to accept the reality of life no matter what!!! Some says that in the wild not many animals dies from illnesses or old age..they will be most often eaten from hyenas or other animals. It may sound cruel but I think that there is no place for sympathy in nature,.... but poor fellow, what a sad end to an animal born to be a King! This is a great documentary capture Carl!

Hello Carl,
An interesting note but a sad story in the same time. At this image I like especially the warm colours, excellent light, fine details, great sharpness and ideal POV. Congratulations!

Hi Carl,
Great picture presented of the wildlife in africa.
The body shows the lioness hunger but cant fight for kill.
Its sad that she will be eaten by some other animal. That's nature carl! You've to fight to survive till the end.
Well done & TFS.

A picture and a story, Carl.
This image is really splendid! The look is fantastic; excellent sharpness and perfect light; very beautiful warm colours and great atmosphere. Very well done.

Hello Carl,
Life goes to an end in nature too. We see it rarely, and this picture of yours reminds us this fact. Amazing documentary shot, I feel sorry for her.
Natural picture and fine approach.
Kind regards
