|The subfamily is Opuntioideae. These cacti are in abundance in the Santa Monica mountains where I go mountain biking. There are 181 species in this genus. I relied on www.cactiguide.com for identification. It thrives in coastal areas.|

A great shot of this Prickly Pear Cactus. I like the angled lighting as it highlights the tiny thorns and left side of the subject. Wonderful detail and beautiful natural colors. The close crop is very attractive and exposure works well in this particular instance.
