Despite my 5˝ years on TN, I have never posted an image of this common but beautiful species.
There are many pairs of Mute swans along the inlets of the Baltic in our new area.

Mute Swan, Cygnus olor

Swedish name: Knölsvan, meaning, 'lump-swan'. This refers to the black knob or lump on the base of the upper part of the bill. This is usually more prominent in males.

This is an endemic species in most of C. and W. Europe. It breeds in the southern half of Sweden, by ponds, lakes or calm inlets and spends the winter in the very South and along the coasts.

The English name implies that it is silent, but it does make grunting and hissing noises. It is more often heard in flight, when the wing-beats make a whistling swishing noise.

It is basically vegetarian, feeding on bottom vegetation by reaching down with its long neck, but occasionally grazes on land. Here the female has just raised her head after searching for food at the bottom. About 1cm of ice had formed on the surface of the water during the night.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 15 meters in the mid-morning light. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

The colours in this image is very striking, especially that of the water and the toffee coloured feathers on the head and in the neck of these beautiful water birds. I also like the natural sunlight very much as it gives extra pizzazz to this lovely image. As a whole it has such a relaxed feel to it. Thanks for sharing and my best regards.
