Goosander - Mergus merganser

A large duck that is commonly seen here along the coast. They’re generally very wary as you approach and mostly stay in flocks. We watched these as they sought shelter from the rough waves in a small harbour. They often fish as a group forming a semicircle and driving the fish into a shallow, where they are captured easily. But here the males were occupied in competing for the females while displaying and making a soft whistle.

The males here are in breeding plumage showing a black head with irridescent green glow. Their wings are black and wqhite and the rump and tail grey. The female are largely grey with a reddish-brown head and white chin. Their bills and legs are red.

These were captured from a distance of about 20 metres with the camera handheld on a dull day. It has been cropped and sharpened.

A couple more views are shown in WORKSHOP.

Hello Ulla,
A Beautiful capture despite the dull day and you had to hold the camera. Perfect detail of the males competing. Just wondreful my friend and thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
Just a tip, I would have taken a few shots playing with a higher ISO to verify the difference. Same with the F-stop.
