[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Most of the time Hairy woodpeckers will let you photograph them. I once saw one sniffing the tree it was pecking on. They do use smell, but I'm not sure for what. I think to sniff out insects. I should mention that this one with the red on his head is male.
