Dark Chanting Goshawk Melierax metabates adult preening

The Chanting Goshawks of Eastern Africa (Dark CG and Eastern CG) are medium sized birds of prey often sitting atop of acacias or bushes.
The great thing about raptor watching in Eastern Africa, mainly in the National Parks is that these birds are not afraid of humans, unlike our raptors in Europe which have been killed and persecuted by humans for centuries. Yesterdays Martial eagle was sitting on the bush an eating the heron and it was much more stressed by the overflying Steppe Eagle than by the car standing less than 50 meters from it. Such an approach would be unthinkable in Europe.

This Dark chanting Goshawk (identified by its darker color and red cere and bill base which is yellow in Eastern) was sitting just about 20 meters from the road and did not even look at our car when we stopped. After about 15 minutes it started to preen, difficult to be more relaxed than this.
Raptor watching is great, but in Africa's national parks it is even better!

WOW Tom ...you have been challengingly close to that one I think despite the use of your 500mm lens ...which is ...what an equivalent to 800mm lens for FF camera ..hm, well I do not need to be really close in that case but ..outstanding capture with superb detail on every in focus element. I do not wanna challenge the colors here...perfectly moderated, balanced and appealing to the eye ...in other words a great presentation of the Dark Chanting Goshawk! Bravo!

Hi Tom,

I had to read the note (& the title) to see this is a raptor (not partridge) - the scene is both beuatiful and playful. And, if you permit, I dare say Europe is much more civillised than my liking! You have to strive harder to look for real tooth & claw of the wild!! TFS.

Subhayan.

Bonjour Tom,
Très belle scène de la vie sauvage très bien restituée sous une excellente profondeur de champ.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
Gérard
