Common or Viviparous Lizard-Zootoca vivipara

Spring is very early here this year and a few warm and sunny days made this little male Lizard wake up from its hibernation! It was about 10 cm long and seemed to be looking for little insects among the Oak leaves.

“The Viviparous lizard feeds on invertebrates, mostly small insects. It shakes larger prey in its jaws before chewing it and swallowing it whole. In early spring, late autumn, and cool summer days it basks in the sun to reach its optimum body temperature, which is about 30 °C.

The lizard mates in April or May. Males take females in their jaws before mating – if the female is not interested, she will bite the male fiercely. The offspring develops for approximately three months inside the female.

The name of the species is derived from its ability to give birth to live young, an adaptation to a cool climate.” (From Wikipedia)´

Its Swedish name is ‘Forest Lizard’.

This was captured with the cmera handheld from a distance of about 1 metre. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla.
What an incredible picture. Clearness of the colors, clarity of the image, details of all attractive objects and especially of the charming lizard are simply outstanding. I met lizard in the garden and around many times and had not any opportunity to take nice shot. Thanks a lot and best wishes.
