I titled this image "Scruffy" because that is what this male American Goldfinch looks like at the moment. As you can easily tell, his Winter plumage is being replaced by new and more colorful Summer feathers. In a few weeks he will have a jet black forehead, white edging on black wings and tail, and his rump will be white.

A week and a half ago he barely had any bright yellow feathers at all, he wore his bland colors of fall. Actually the male and female are pretty hard to tell apart in the late Fall and Winter, as both look very similar.

These pretty little finches will spend the entire summer here in Ohio, feeding on insects and visiting feeders filled with black sunflower or thistle seed. I took this photo this morning in our back yard.

A fine capture of this male Amercican Goldfinch undergoing moulting.
The POV is perfect and the use of flash has brightened him up a bit against a nice neutral BG.

Hi Ron,

Hello Ron,

Hope you are doing fine and a very happy Easter to you, friend.Indeed a photo worth keeping and loving, this is indeed an excellent shot of this male American Gold Finch. I often used to think flash effects the image and makes it look a shade artificial but here on TN this misconception has been removed. In the flash light the yellow canary-like plumage of this finch looks great. Thanks a lot for sharing a super shot...happy Easter Sunday to you again.....take care, my friend....warmest regards/Abid

Bonjour Ron,
Don't mind that the American Goldfinch looks scruffy...it looks just great with this "artistic" plumage. Best sharpness and a perfect blurred background. Interesting personal note.
Thanks and kind regards
