English:

Class: Insecta; Order: Odonata; Family: Libellulidae;
Genus: Sympetrum; Species: Sympetrum vulgatum

The Vagrant Darter, Sympetrum vulgatum, is a European dragonfly. The species takes it English name from its habit of occasionally appearing as a rare vagrant north of its normal range.

Description:
Length: 35-40mm
Like the Common Darter but the mature male is a deeper red. The sides of the thorax are not so well marked. In hand examination of the frons is needed to be sure of this species.
Habitat:
Shallow ponds and lakes with abundant marginal vegetation.
Status and Distribution:
Rare migrant from Central Europe.
Similar species:
Very similar to Common Darter. The black transvers bar above the frons descends down the inner margins of the eyes. A character not seen except when examined in hand. Possibly under recorded.

Deutsch:

Klasse: Insekten; Ordnung: Libellen; Familie: Segellibellen; Gattung: Heidelibellen; Art: Gemeine Heidelibelle

Merkmale:

Hello Helmut,
Outstanding super macro. I am always amazed whenever I view an extremely close-up shot of an insect, because they look so different then what were used to seeing.
Love the fine detail and vivid colors. Excellent DOF achieved and perfectly exposed. Well done!!
Ron
