Ashy Mining Bee, Adrena cineraria
Swedish name: Sobersandbi, meaning ‘sober sand-bee’

This is one of my first macros with my new 100 mm lens that has an image stabiliser.

The Ashy Mining Bee is a solitary bee species. It is found in most of Europe up to Central Asia.

This may be the first posting of this species on TN.

It is about 1.4 cm long. Here the size can be compared to the Sloe flowers Prunus spinosa) that she is on.
The female like this one is active during fruit tree blossom time from March to June. She digs a hole in sandy soil about 20 cm deep, lays eggs in the cells she has constructed and provides enough pollen and nectar to allow the larvae to develop.
Her pollen baskets are loaded in this picture.

This was taken at a distance of about 30cm with the camera hand held. The IS allowed a relatively low shutter speed without the need of a tripod.

After moderate cropping and size reduction this image was slightly sharpened, adjusted for levels and converted from RAW.

Bonsoir Ivan,
Funny I have taken pictures of this bee for the first time this year a few days after you, close to my chalet. I will show it later once.
You had the luck to find it on this white blossom, what always is a plus for the charm of a picture. It also seems that yours was a very busy bee :-) Very fine and interesting shot indeed.
Bonne soirée et amitiés à vous deux
Anne

Hi Ivan,

A nice shot of the Ashen miner bee (Andrena cineraria)with your new lens, excellent detail, colour and contrast. Taken on a good subject matter.
They are protected in the UK, I know because I have them in my lawns, and I posted one on TN in April 2010. They leave a nice little hole in the lawn with a pile of the spoil around the hole. The only seem to live in old established grass/lawns.

Hope to see a lot more fine macro's from you now with the new lens
Have a nice weekend, and thanks for sharing
regards Bill

Hello Ivan,
If this is an example of one of your first shots with your new lens, I can't wait to see what is coming in the future posts from you!! Spectacular detail and excellent exposure.
Looks so real I feel as though I could actually reach out and touch him. I would try, but I'm afraid I would get stung!!
