Potamon potamios (Olivier, 1804)

Potamon potamios is a semi-terrestrial freshwater crab.
It is found in Greece (East Aegean Is., Kriti), Cyprus, Southern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestinian Territory, Jordan and Egypt (Sinai). Its habitat includes diverse freshwater environments including streams, rivers and lakes.

In Cyprus Potamon potamios is locally common in the numerous year-round small springs and seepages in the Akamas peninsula, and in the mountain streams of the Troodos mountains and Paphos Forest. However, freshwater crabs have disappeared from many parts of Cyprus probably as a result of the extensive use of DDT and other insecticides during the campaign against malaria. The use of less harmful insecticides in recent years has seen some recovery of certain populations of this species.

Despite the wide distribution of this species (E00 940,000 km²) and the relatively high number of localities and records In the “IUCN Red List of Threatened Species” Potamon potamios is assessed as Least Concern because “it is possible that populations of P. potamios in parts of its range might be in danger of extirpation in the future, especially those on islands in the eastern Aegean or near centres of human population on the mainland from southern Turkey to the Sinai peninsula in Egypt”.

Hi Christodoulos

Beautiful full frame extreme close in nice light and pose of the freshwater crab. The colours are a little different than the freshwater crabs in India which are red/brown and black.
