Surprisingly, some butterflies including this Plain Tiger are flying around in the sunny afternoon despite cold conditions in this north Indian region in the Himalayan foothills. I shot this picture in the afternoon on December 8.

Danaus chrysippus, known as the Plain Tiger or African Monarch, is a common butterfly which is widespread in Asia and Africa. It belongs to the Danainae ("Milkweed butterflies") subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family, Nymphalidae. It is a medium-sized, non-edible butterfly, which is mimicked by multiple species.

The Plain Tiger is believed to be one of the first butterflies to be used in art. A 3500 year old Egyptian fresco in Luxor features the oldest illustration of this species.

The Plain Tiger can be considered the archetypical danaine of India. Accordingly, this species has been studied in greater detail than other members of its subfamily occurring in India.

Ahhh love breathing in such beauty!! Awesome capture my friend! Did you filter her? Nothing plain about this :0) I do notice when we upload its not as sharp as the original, not sure what causes this. Really enjoy this portrayal and muted background; you picked the right settings

Hello Mr. Ram
Nowadays I have been busy with academic duties and rarely visited TN. So I missed your last several posts. This is very nice capture of pretty Danaus chrysippus from dorsal POV. Focus, colors and composition also nice. It appears here in Autumn and early winter in South Turkiye.
Thanks for sharing this beauty. Well done.
Best regards

Hello Ram,
When you posted the last image of a Plain Tiger with closed wings I was hoping you would sometime post one with opened wings...and here it is!
Just as I suspected, it is as pretty with opened wings as it is with closed. An attractive presentation!!
