This is a Cygnet, a juvenile Mute Swan, with the future in front.

The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is a species of swan, and thus a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is native to much of Europe and Asia, and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa. It is also an introduced species in North America, Australasia and southern Africa. The name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species. It is recognisable by its pronounced knob atop the bill.

The Mute Swan was first formally described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin as Anas olor in 1789, and was transferred by Johann Matthäus Bechstein to the new genus Cygnus in 1803. It is the type species of the genus Cygnus. Both cygnus and olor mean "swan" in Latin; cygnus is related to the Greek kyknos. The synonym Sthenelides olor has occasionally been used in the past.

Adults of this large swan range from 125 to 170 centimetres long with a 200 to 240 centimetres wingspan. They may stand over 120 centimetres tall on land. Males are larger than females and have a larger knob on their bill.
The Mute Swan is one of the heaviest flying birds, with males (known as cobs) averaging about 12 kilograms and the slightly smaller females (known as pens) weighing about 9 kilograms.
Young birds, called cygnets, are not the bright white of mature adults, and their bill is dull greyish-black, not orange, for the first year. The down may range from pure white to grey to buff, with grey/buff the most common. The white cygnets have a leucistic gene. All Mute Swans are white at maturity, though the feathers (particularly on the head and neck) are often stained orange-brown by iron and tannins in the water.

Hallo Peter
Wow this is a beauty! The colours and details in the bird's face is spectacular. I like the wide openend wing position, showing all the Swan's fine qualities to the best. I also like the point of view and the almost full framed composition, and the blue sky that acts as the background and a natural framing. Like always your posting is a pleasure to stop by. Thanks for sharing and all the best for you in 2013. Best regards.

Beautiful photo Peter! Wonderful flying pose, excellent composition, nice lighting and good sharpness!

Hi Peter
Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours in the future. You have struck a cord with me with this image. I joined this site to learn how to improve at capturing these types of images. I know how difficult
this is to do. You have done it so well, with the light on swan, the bird moving to the side to stay on target, and balance of light, IOS and shutter speed. Just a terrific image Peter.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Peter,

Hope you are doing fine dear friend. Hope too the Christmas was good and I also wish you a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year with more photo opportunities. Yes, indeed the young swan is heading towards a brighter future on the troubled blue. This is an excellent in-flight shot, Peter. The grace and elegance of flight of these wonderful birds is matchless. Your angle is perfect and the details of the plumage is catch the eye. A superb shot indeed, for such in-flight shots are so very difficult to take. Agree with Miss Piggy, this is a 'wow!' shot.
Thanks a lot for sharing it....take care in the happy new year....warm regards/Abid

Hello Peter,

Perfect capture of this Mute Swan in flight and leading us into the New Year. The blue sky in optimum contrast to the white plumage and contour/undulation of the wings in fine detail with the impressive focus. Very nice indeed and a Happy New Year to you and your family!

Hello Peter.
This is a fine in flight capture in full spreading wings. The clear sky and details of the underside are beautiful in the frame.

Hi Peter,

The space in front of the bird is indicating movement. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the juveline Mute Swan in flight. There is a good contrast between the colours of the picture. Have a nice day.
