[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We in Sweden and most of N Europe have had a long cold winter and look forward very much to spring that should have arrived by now!

Black-headed Gull, Chroicocephalus ridibundus

Swedish name: Skrattmås, meaning ’laughing gull’

These three are moulting their plumage ready for the spring.
For the purpose of this posting we can ignore the BG female mallard.

The nearest gull is beginning to gain breeding plumage while the next has already its ’black’ head and the third has almost changed.

In the winter their heads are almost white with a few black marks and the bill and feet are an orange red that changes to deep red in the spring breeding phase.

This is a common Eurasian species of Gull. Though many move south, some remain in Sweden all year round.

Note that the furthest gull has a pink tinge to its breast. This is due to eating food rich in carotines, like shrimps. This is why flamigoes have this colour.

This was taken with my compact camera at 50x zoom.

After slight cropping and size reduction and light adjustment the image was slightly sharpened and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Hi Ivan,

We feel the same in the UK, spring seems to briefly appear then disappear for a few more days.

A very good group shot of these gulls, a nice dof gets them all in focus, showing very detail and colours. They all seem to be looking fed up with the weather. I like the diagonal of the gulls, nice composition,

TFS regards Bill.

Hello Ivan

Here in Montréal area it was almost the spring,
the Ring-billed Gulls are back in their flight
and cry in the sky, but today we had a snow
storm of more than 25cm of snow. Last year
exactly this day with Ranger we went in the
woods to see if the woodcocks where back from
the south and their was 2 woodcocks (I have
posted an in-flight photo at that time),
with the snow we had this year I think
woodcocks will back only in early April.

Beautiful photo of these gulls with the mallard
female with fine POV and DOF, the birds pose
is going well with the title and the beginning
of your notes, beautiful light, TFS

Very nice line-up, Ivan!

Here we are in the end of our spring. With no substantial rain in the past six weeks, late species have strted blooming, and some green is tuning yellow.

All the best,

A good capture. also the subject looks as if waiting for someone. nicely focused and perfect lighting.
