This was when I took a walk in a nearby wood that had been cleared of thickets and the trees partially cleared to thin it out.
It was sunny but the cold easterly wind kept the temperature down to 4 degrees. No butterfly weather so I rooted in a rotting aspen log and found this bright little beetle.

False Ladybird, Endomychus coccineus

The scientific name implies a ladybird look-alike in a fungal habitat.

Swedish name: Fyrfläckig svampbagge, meaning ’four-spotted fungus beetle’.

Though this species mimics the appearance of a Ladybird it not poisonous. The warning colours of a ladybird that is poisonous, help cause predators to avoid it.
Also unlike a ladybird it is not carnivorous but feeds on rotting deciduous wood that has fungal growth in its fibres. Its larvae do the same.

Though not very common it is widespread in Europe.

At 4-5mm long it is a good subject for my 100mm macro lens. This was taken with my camera hand-held.

After light cropping and size reduction and light adjustment the image was slightly sharpened and converted to JPEG.

Special beetle is this. Exceptional clarity and great sharpness in this macro with impressive details. Fine diagonal composition.

Hello Ivan.
I like the title and the name given to this fine specimen. From the thumbnail, anyone could have been fooled by the ladybird lookalike but the body is much sleeker. Excellent image with beautiful light and details.

Great to be your neighbour today, Ivan!
It it obvious that spring is now well on its way in your country. The appearance of this Ladybird look-alike Beetle for you to capture suggests it.
And what a marvellous capture it is! The uppish frontal POV shows the entire insect in absolutely sharp focus with superb glossy colours on it. The aspen log provides a fitting background.

Hi Ivan,
Excellent macro shot with simplistic yet great composition and nice colors. Probably the bug might be sharpened a little more after re-sizing, at least in my opinion, otherwise a powerful capture. Clear, simple yet spectacular, and as always, crowned with an interesting, useful note. Great image.
Best regards, László
