Magenta Daisy / Senecio speciosus

Today I share one of the prettiest flowers I came across in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve during our October 2012 holiday. A daisy is actually such a common flower but the way the sunlight brought out its beautiful colours after a downpour of rain made this such a lovely sight. I could easily stay in this beautiful Nature Reserve for hours if I was left there. It is such a delightful experience to walk through this beautiful piece of land with your camera in your hand, as there is not only flowers but insects, birds, reptiles and many more that offers such a lot of photographic opportunities.

The Magenta daisy is a perennial herb with stems to 70cm high from a woody rootstock, often arched at the base then erect. Leaves mostly in a basal rosette, elliptical and lobed or toothed, somewhat fleshy and usually glandular-hairy.

Flower heads deep pink to purple with similar coloured ray florets, 30-40mm diameter, surrounded by a single series of hairless or glandular-hairy bracts. Habitat is damp grassland, often in marshy depressions.

Fernkloof Nature Reserve covers 1800ha in the Kleinrivier Mountains above Hermanus and ranges in altitude from sea level to 842m. In late 1957, the Reserve was proclaimed by the Provincial Council of the Cape. It protects coastal and fynbos and a small patch of evergreen forest. Parts of the coastal area including the Cliff Path Nature Area, the Mossel River valley and the area from De Mond to Kettle Point, including the mouth of the Vogelgat River and part of the Klein River lagoon have recently been incorporated in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. This means that the coastal area with its unique fynbos - different from that on the mountain slopes - as well as the sensitive lagoon area, are now being included, and for the first time mountain and coastline will be linked.

There is no other place on earth where so many different species can be seen growing in such close proximity. In Fernkloof 1474 species have thus far been collected and identified. The name of the principal vegetation type of this region is derived from the Dutch word 'fijn bosch' which is the collective name for a myriad of evergreen shrub-like plants with small firm leaves, often rolled - but also includes woody plants with hard leathery leaves, usually broad, often rolled. The prevailing climate is Mediterranean with cold wet winters and hot dry summers with strong south easterly winds.

Grey rhebok, Cape grysbok, klipspringer, baboon, mongoose and dassie are present in small numbers. Others such as porcupine, genet and hare are nocturnal and these mammals are seldom seen. Although not as rich in bird-life as other areas in South Africa, 92 bird species have been recorded. Species most likely to be seen include the Cape Sugar Bird, Sunbirds, Rock Thrush and Rock Jumper. Raptors include the Jackal Buzzard and Black Eagle. Limited areas of forest alongside streams support numbers of seed and insect-eating species such as Rameron Pigeon, Canaries, Flycatchers and White-eyes.

The reserve lies on the northern side of the town with a 60km network of trails. These provide the opportunity for people of all fitness levels to go out and enjoy some exercise and fresh air. A display of some of the flowers that can be found in the veld is permanently maintained at the Fernkloof Visitors Centre. The various trails offer magnificent and unequalled views of Walker Bay, the Hemel en Aarde Valley and Maanskynbaai.

Perfect composition, nice mirror in drops of water.

Hello Anna

The magenta in both its dark and lighted shades is simply gorgeous especially with the blue in the centre. But for me the myriad different ways in which the water droplets acquaint themselves to the curled up petals of this daisy is more interesting. Nice sharp capture and beautiful presentation.

Thanks
Himanshu

This is the first time I am seeing a daisy with folded petals. Nice image with natural colors and good sharpness

Hallo Anna,
This is my dream photo!!! The Ruby red colour of this Magenta Daisy etched against the contradicting green BG is magnificent. It almost seem to leap at the camera! Perfect POV and the f7.1 gave you that equally perfect DOF. The rain droplets is anything but a bonus because you created this exposure enduring the elements. You are the bonus to TN and it's members for picking the right moment to capture this, as you mentioned in your notes, perfect moment my friend! Thanks for sharing and greetings to Loot.
Best regards,
Carl

Jammer as ek weg gevoer word met die foto en dat ek soms dieselfde woorde gebruik maar ek hardloop uit woorde uit om die "fantastiese" foto te beskryf nie.

Hi Anna,

The daisy itself would have make a beautiful photo. But with the rain drops on the beautiful patels makes it even more beautiful, the color are well saturated when wet and the water drop with their shinny and glistine with reflected light is like diamond ond pearl scatter around the beautiful flower. Icing on the cake. Beautifula and symetrical composition with a perfectly circle formed by the magenta patels.

Hello Anna,
Rosie and I are sitting here just admiring your gorgeous flower. Rosie works part time at a local Green House and loves all kinds of flowers. She thinks this particular flower is exceptionally beautiful and I definitely agree.
The intricate shape of it's petals is so eye-catching and unique. We also like it's blue center and of course the water droplets, which are an added bonus. Great work!!
Ron

Hello Anna,
What a beautiful flower and so well portrayed here. The colours and sharpness are wonderful, with the droplets a real bonus. I found your note very interesting and Fernkloof Nature Reserve must be a very pleasant and rewarding place to visit. Some dear friends are retiring to Hermanus at the end of the year and I expect that we will be visiting in which case I will definitely not miss the nature reserve. Best wishes.
