I am a happy grandfather. My elder granddaughter (nine years old) is a permanent companion on my photo walks. She usually pictures the same subjects as me using own small compact camera. And I am very happy.

My youngest granddaughter is only almost one and a half year old. However, it is her service that I managed to take the whole series of this specimen of giant (at least for me) grasshopper. Just she had met this insect, asked her mother (my daughter in low) in her special baby language and only then I had been called with camera on photo session :).

When session was over, older granddaughter gave me advise what shot should be shared with TN-members and as a result this shot is on your monitors.

This specimen is large enough. Its size (size of the body) is about 7 cm. I have never met so large grasshoppers before around our countryside garden. Since I had chance to take many shots of the insect, which was sitting on a blackberry bush, at different POVs I took some of them against children inflatable pool.

Help with ID is welcomed.

Shot is resized strongly and not sharpened at all.

The insect is identified owing to Christodoulos Makris (chrimakris). Thanks a lot for help.

This is Decticus albifrons: Decticus albifrons.

Hi Alexei,
Another nice photo. Very good details and colours
the grassopper and flover too. Fantastic contrast against the blue background.
Regards Jiri.
I greet granddaughters!

Dear Alexei,
very nice story on how that image was made. You are a lucky man with such loveble companions! That huge cricket is shown with excellent details, well served on a plate of lush leaves. Composition probably might be worth trying a version with slightly less space at the left and a little bit more space in front of the insect to add further tension - if that is intended. A very clear and colourful, perfectly well describing and sunny high quality presentation. Thank you! With best regards from Vienna, and all by best wishes to you!
Peter

Privet Alexei,
It's always so good when you can share your hobby with your children / grandchildren. I think your granddaughter's choice was great, this is a nice shot. No need to re-sharpen in my opinion. Colorwise it has a little blue overcast (just slight), but I'm satisfied with the composition, because the main elements, which grab the attention of the viewer (head and antennae) are perfectly in the right third of the image. Next time, if you want, you can share the young lady's pic as a workshop photo also, when you make photo sessions together. Just an idea.
Best regards, László
