[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Arctic Skua Stercorarius parasiticus, known as the Parasitic Jaeger in the US and Canada, is a migratory seabird that nests on the ground in the far north, mainly in the tundra regions, and spends the winter months in the southern oceans. It is quite capable of hunting its own food, which may be lemmings and voles, small birds or insects, but it is best known for stealing fish from other seabirds - particularly gulls and terns - by chasing them with great speed and determination until they drop their prey.

It has a powerful, graceful flight style that is reminiscent of a falcon and occurs in three colour morphs - light, dark and intermediate. This is a dark morph bird photographed in a remote area of north-west Scotland where a few pairs breed each year.

The photograph was taken in the evening, with the sun close to the horizon behind me - particularly important for "shooting" birds in flight because it allows the low-angled sun to illuminate the bird's underside, which is so often in shadow.

There are few postings of this species on TN, so I hope you enjoy a view of this elegant northern pirate.

Hallo Merlin
An absolute brilliant image!
Here you have a fullpointer! This is a absolutely amazing photo of this Skua in flight! Great moment captured. You even got a small glimpse in the eye.

To me it is technically perfect and I just love the subtle colours and the careful treatment from you. Great note as well. This will be a favourite of mine!

Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Nigel, this is one of the most beautiful captures of birds in flight I've ever seen. Your very precise and personal note makes it clear how you utilized the ambient evening light to produce this marvellous picture with perfect clarity. I'm particularly impressed with the significance of low light in bird imagery you have mentioned in your note.
Thanks and regards.
