Bennett's Woodpecker / Campethera bennettii

The Bennett's Woodpecker is number 63 in the series of birds of the Kruger National Park which I am currently sharing.

This image was taken from my archives from 2010. I captured it early on a cloudy morning at the Berg-and-Dal camp with very little available light.

To my surprise I could not really find sufficient information in a single article or write-up about this bird. The most websites contained plenty of photos and only the most necessary details and not a complete description, as I am use to and prefer to share with my postings.

Distribution and habitat
Occurs from Tanzania south to Botswana, Zimbabwe, north central Namibia, Mozambique and north-eastern South Africa. It generally prefers deciduous woodland and savannah with tall trees, especially with Broad-leaved miombo (Brachystegia), Zambezi teak (Baikiaea plurijuga) and Burkea (Burkea Africana).

Feeds mainly on ants, their eggs and pupae, doing most of its foraging by excavating underground ant nests, scooping them up with its sticky tongue. It also eats beetles and termite alates.

It uses cavities in trees as nests, either made by the breeding pair or by other woodpeckers (such as the Bearded Woodpecker); the latter is more commonly recorded. Egg-laying season is from August-February, peaking from October-December. It lays 2-6 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for 15-18 days. The chicks stay in the nest for 26-27 days, after which they remain dependent on their parents until the next breeding season.

Names of this avian species in other languages
Afrikaans - Bennettse speg
German - Bennettspecht
French - Pic de Bennett
Dutch - Bennett-specht woodpecker
Portuguese - Pica-pau de Bennett Source

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

My dearest friend,
I am amazed about the specialities you discover in the bush (may be you must give me the address of your optician? :-))

This woodpecker looks adorable with it's little red Riding hood type head, and I really like the luminous colours.

In view of the unusual feeding habits (I mean for a WoodPecker) I have added the image to my theme "Animals feeding".

I also admire your archiving method. I can't find particular photos when I want to.
Did I tell you that Woodpeckers' brain is especially cushioned to protect them from concussion. Although this one - may be- is not in view of his different feeding habit...
The vibrant colours of the ground cover really enhance the photo.

Thanks for sharing.

Hello Anna,
An attractive presentation of this colorful woodpecker shown from a nice low POV. Did you ever notice how so many woodpeckers from all around the globe have red on their heads, especially the males.
Looks like this particular bird has found something interesting among the many purple petals lying on the ground. A real beauty and captured perfectly by your lens.

dear Anna,
very beautiful and glad colours.
perfect focus.

best wishes,
Mehran Jahangiri.

Hello Anna,
Beautiful photography of this Woodpecker.
Great color and details.Excellent composition and timing.
Great point of view.
And thank you for your comment.
Thanks for sharing..

Hallo Anna,
What strikes me the most of this photo is that at first glance the Woodpecker seems to melt in with it's surroundings. Then with the second look, you see the most beautiful striking colours. I like the DOF and low POV. The Jacaranda flowers (I believe) on the ground also gives this composition that special effect. Excellent work my friend.
Best regards,

Hi Anna.
Many years I am trying to take picture of woodpecker. I often see and hear them, even took few shots but have not any decent picture until now. Yours is amazing. Coloration of the species is fine and unusual for our birds, scenery is very suitable for this and also are fine, Details of the bird and surroundings are stunning too. Well done and kind regards.

Hi Anna,

I like the way that you frame the bird. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the Bennett's Woodpecker. THe good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Anna,
One of the best photos of this species I've ever seen. Excellent sharpness, details and a very good timing. It looks a bit like our Green Woodpecker, also often on the ground. Beautiful colours, in the background too.
