INSECTA-LEPIDOPTERA-NYMPHALIDAE
Melitaea arduinna, (Esper [1784])
Freyer's Fritillary

Turkish Name Türkistan İparhanı kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Generally, South Anatolia, Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia.

Distribution in the world: Freyer's Fritillary is a South Asian species whose distribution area of the Altai to Afghanistan via Iran, Iraq and Jordan, as well as the southern Russian steppes and the South Urals extends to Turkey and the southern Balkans. In Europe, it occurs only very locally in the montane some hills and highlands of northwestern Greece to the south east of Romania and on the lower Volga.

Living Area: Bushy glades in woodland.

Flight time: One generation. Mid-May to June; a month later in the northeast.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, Centaurea spp-(Knapweeds) family fed plants.

Description-Notes: Freyer's Fritillary-(Melitaea arduinna) very similar to the Glanville Fritillary –(Melitaea cinxia) The moths usually wear but obeseits a slightly reddish base color and are on average larger. Especially in Europe, they are also marked on the upper side dark little stronger on average. The most distinctive feature is, however, on the hind wing underside. Here it is lying on the fringe black spot at number Glanville Fritillary –(Melitaea cinxia) of more or less round, always clearly separated points. In Freyer's Fritillary are the flat triangles, which are often grown together. Male is reddish brown with black borders and spots, but has a cleaner, less reticulated look than similar species, including Knapweed Fritillary and Glanville Fritillary. Note the hindwing postmedian row of small black spots. Female is duller and more heavily dusted with dark brown scales. Note that narrow hindwing black marginal lines interrupted by veins form a more or less continuous line(they are distinctly discrete rounded or triangular spots on Glanville Fritillary). Small black dots within orange postmedian band on hindwing separate it from Knapweed Fritillary.

Wingspan: 44-46 mm long.

Similar Species:
• Glanville Fritillary- Melitaea cinxia, (Linnaeus, 1758)
• Knapweed Fritillary– Melitaea phoebe, (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775)
• Provencal Fritillary– Melitaea deione, (Geyer, 1832)
• Nickerl's Fritillary– Melitaea aurelia, (Nickerl, 1850)
• Heath Fritillary- Melitaea athalia, (Rottemburg, 1775)
• Aetherie Fritillary- Melitaea aetherie, (Hübner, 1826)

Etymology: "The Ardennes, therefore, as epithet of Diana" . S PULER 1 (1908: 22R):

Salam Seyfi
what a fabulous presentation. The colours are so fine and the lighting is perfect to see those details on the wings.
The colour contrast is very lively.
Well presented view.

Regards
Foozi

Hi Seyfi,

The flower is helping to frame the butterflies. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the Freyer's Fritillary butterflies. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.
