[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Winter has set in here in Jammu and butterflies and other insects have almost vanished. Only some Common Castors are on the wing and they are mostly at the terminal stage of their lives, like the one I shot yesterday. This is its dry season form. Here it is.

Ariadne merione, also known as the Common Castor, is an orange butterfly with brown lines whose larvae feed almost exclusively on Castor Ricinus communis. It is similar in appearance to Ariadne ariadne, the Angled Castor.

This species is found in south-eastern Asia. Their wingspan ranges between 30–35mm. Like others in the Nymphalidae family, their front two legs are small and unused, effectively making them four-legged. These smaller appendages are covered with long hairs, giving them the characteristic brush look.

Dry Season Form

Upperside : ground-colour much paler, the transverse lines more distinctly in pairs, forming bands, the ground-colour between each pair more dusky brown. Underside similar to that in the wet-season form, but the ground-colour paler, the bands more diffuse.

Distribution

All over India, Simla to Sikkim in the Himalayas and recorded from Rajasthan and Bengal; Assam; Burma; Malayan Subregion.

Hello Ram,
Exceptional beauty, this Common Castor. Very beautiful markings on the wings. Nice photo in good sharpness and natural colours. Pleasing contrasts.

You were a bit sentimental between your lines in your note, and me too because the winter is coming and no butterflies can survive. Hello Ram,
Even though it is a bit tattered and torn this butterfly still displays some of it's intricate and beautiful markings from earlier days. From this photo I can only imagine how pretty it must have been when it first emerged from it's pupa.
Nice sharp focus and shown in an attractive manner under just the right lighting. Your leaf also looks interesting with it's uniquely shaped serrated edges. Well done!!
