Tawny Owl
 |
|
[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) one of our most common owls in the UK and frequently heard calling at night where pairs often use the "T'wit T'woo" call that has become associated with these birds. (Usually on bird in a pair calls the "T'wit" sound whilst the other bird answers with the T'woo" sound).
Tawny's usually live in hollow tree trunks and live on a diet of small mammals and large insects, although it is also known for them to predate on birds up to the size of mallard ducks!
Nearly all hunting and feeding takes place at night where the owl uses it's keen eyesight and even keener asymmetrical hearing to locate prey.
Their range extends from Europe across Asia from England across to India and Burma as well as parts of North Africa, although distribution is not continuous. Tawny Owls prefer woodland or forest habitat, usually at lower altitudes according to temperature. For example in Scotland Tawny Owls will inhabit and breed up to around 550m altitude, where as in Burma they have been seen at up to 2800m.
This particular owl is a young captive bred owl and has been photographed in a typical Tawny Owl hollow tree in the New Forest in Southern England.
