De oehoe, heeft een groot verspreidingsgebied. Hij leeft in Europa ( behalve in Denemarken waar het laatste paartje in 1891 door een jachtopziener werd gedood en Engeland), Noord-Afrika en "Eurazië".
De oehoe vrouwtjes zijn bij deze nachtroofvogel groter dan de mannetjes. Zij is zo’n 73 cm lang en weegt zo’n 3.3 kg, terwijl hij ca. 62 cm meet en 2.7 kg zwaar is. Wel hebben ze beiden een identiek verenkleed. De oehoe heeft een grote massieve kop met lange oorpluimen (dit zijn echter niet zijn oren!) en grote oranje ogen waar hij ‘s nachts uitstekend mee kan zien. Overigens kan bij echt volledige duisternis ook de oehoe niets meer zien. Naast dit prima gezichtsvermogen is ook zijn gehoor zeer scherp. Een ander kenmerk van alle uilen is dat ze hun kop bijna geheel rond kunnen draaien: dit kunnen ze dankzij een groot aantal halswervels.
Zijn verenkleed is rossig bruin gekleurd met vele verticale zwarte strepen op zijn lijf. Net als alle andere uilensoorten hebben ook de oehoes een zeer dicht, zacht verenkleed, wat het hun mogelijk maakt om vrijwel geruisloos te vliegen.

Extremly sharp and perfectly exposed. I'm not used to profil portrait of birds, but this one is excellent. Plenty of details in the feathers, we can can see its beack, and that orange eye stand out beautifully.
