Hyles euphorbiae euphorbiae
Lepidoptera: Sphingidae
Common name: Spurge Hawk-moth

Hyles euphorbiae euphorbiae is a very common spingidae using as food plant sea spurge, Euphorbia sp. This insect is used as an agent of biological pest control against the noxious weed sea spurge but usually only in conjunction with other agents. The larvae consume the leaves and bracts of the plant. This in picture is the final instar ready to pupate which feeds on leaves and bracts of Euphorbia sp. The hill I visited (Amnissos hill) had many Euphorbia plants which have damaged severely by H. euphorbia larvae at a percentage over 70%. I posted a newer instar in WS.

The caterpillar is smooth and black, with innumerable whitish dots; there are also eleven large spots of the same colour arrayed in a row on each side of the back, and beneath these as many spots of the same size and of a bright coral-red colour; the head is of the same coral-red colour, and a line of the same colour runs all along the back, from the head to the horn; the horn is red at the base and black at the tip.

Hello Nikos,
I am always thrilled when I see a new and beautiful caterpillar, this is one of them. The mixture of multiple colors is stunning to view. Hawk Moth caterpillars come in an array of beautiful patterns while their horned hind ends give them a fierce appearance. A crystal clear shot displaying exceptional detail and perfect exposure. Your WS is just as impressive!!

An eccentric carterpillar Nikos,beautiful capure.

Thanks for sharing.
