Good Vibrations

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a Barking Treefrog male calling in a roadside pond in South Carolina.
As I generally do when photographing calling frogs, I prefocused with a small flashlight (torch), turned the flashlight off, then crouched in the dark with my flash in hand and just shot when I heard the big fellow call. I shot a series of shots each time he called, but this was my favorite. Scanned from Ektachrome Elite 100 slide.
Barking Treefrogs (Hyla gratiosa) are the largest treefrogs native to the US (there is a larger introduced Cuban Treefrog in Florida). They are commonly heard calling on warm spring and summer nights in the Southeastern states.
Their call is described as "bark-like", thus giving these robust Hylids their common name. To me, a chorus in the distance sounds like someone swinging a piece of hose around in the air.
These big frogs also tend to sit out in the open on logs of the side of trees during the heat of the day in surprisingly exposed positions. Their spotting makes them hard to see and their background color varies from reddish brown, like this one, to bright green.
I particularly like the way his call is vibrating the water and the "bow-wave" in front of his vocal sac. |

What a great POV on this frog, Chris. He was really posing for you. Sharp details, good light and colors. Well done and TFS. : )
Not easy to have a sharp shot !
But it's funny to see also water vibrate.
Good composition
