I'm not positive but I believe these are Mammatus and Cumulonimbus.

I drove underneath this cloud and was happy I stopped to capture a few pictures. The clouds were really performing this day and I can't say that I've ever seen anything so erie and ominous. There was even a small rain shower. An in Alberta style the sun shone not to long after.

Mammatus clouds can form under not just cumulonimbus but also cirrocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus and stratocumulus.

Mammatus form when the sinking air is cooler than the ground air and have a high amount of water or ice.

Mammatus get their name from the bag like sacs that are underneath a cow's udder.

Seeing this cloud does not mean that there will be a tornado even though they can be associated with thunderstorms.

Hello Janice,
I also think you are right (ID). Very well captured this cloud formation. Scary! It would be more attractive if you could get little bit more landscape with light (although it was dark).

Wow! I just saw these same clouds a few days ago. Odd how if the wind blows from the West and normally goes east and not northeast in winter how they can make it to the middle reaches of the continent. The clouds offer our lives a great variety, and spell warning to those of us that await Mother Nature to wreak havoc on our journeys.

Amazing clouds. Excellent image with splendid clarity and DOF. The stormy clouds are terrific. Srikumar has right....it is a saying in photography in my country that the subject should be placed in third gold, (that means land must be represented by 1/3 and clouds 2/3 from the height of the photo).
Still I love this superb image and it goes to my favorites.

Very effect shot of this swirling mass of clouds. I like the xposure dark enough to give a sense of the pending storm, but light enough to preserve detail witout blowing out the horizon's colors.
