Mating can occur in late winter during February and March and in summer between June and July. Up to two litters a year per female are possible. Each litter usually contains three or four young although as many as six may be born. Gestation is about 38 to 39 days. The young are looked after by the mother alone and are born helpless, blind and deaf and weigh between 10 and 15 g. Their body is covered by hair at 21 days, their eyes and ears open after three to four weeks, and they develop all their teeth by 42 days. Juvenile red squirrels can eat solids around 40 days following birth and from that point can leave the nest on their own to find food; however, they still suckle from their mother until weaning occurs at 8 to 10 weeks. I was surprised t see this cute squirrel just very close to me and had to react quickly not to miss it.
In have taken the picture in a wild and protected area where these animals are very shy.

Bonjour Anne,
A true beauty this long haired Red Squirrel. You captured the critter perfectly in such a quick decision. We have two species here, the Pine and the obnoxious but very acrobatic Gray Squirrels. The Pines do not jump 5 feet straight up to grasp the bird feeders and choose to eat everything in them as do the Grays. One day last spring I was standing on the deck taking pics of the birds when I felt something touch the top of my foot, and when I looked down I was stunned as a baby Pine had placed his foot on top of my own so I would not step on him or her as it was eating the nuts that had fallen from the feeders. I see the Pine every day as I do the 27 types of birds we have visit. I can ship you a few Grays for No Charge if you wish…(:-)

Hello Anne,
A wonderful shot of this very attractive Red Squirrel with a nut in it's mouth. They have such soft looking fur and the color is quite beautiful. I love their long pointed ear tuffs, this is something the squirrels around here lack. The catchlight in it's eye always makes a big difference and is a real bonus.

erfrischend lebendiges Portrait dieses nicht immer scheuen, immer aber sehr flinken Baumbewohners, der es bei meinen Annäherungsversuchen immer verstanden hat, rasch auf die Kehrseite des Baumstammes zu verschwinden.
Lustig, seine Äuglein so lebensfroh funkeln zu sehen, voll Vorfreude auf die fette Nuss in seinem Mäulchen. Du verstehst es so prima, kleine Geschichten zu sehen und einzufangen, die uns die Abgebildeten als uns ganz nahestehende Geschöpfe ans Herz legen. Bei Menschen ohnedies - wo dieses Talent von Dir besonders zur Entfaltung kommt - und - wie auf dieser Seite oft zu sehen - auch bei Tieren.
Dass dieses Eichhörnchen von der Fotografin nicht verlangt, dass sie sich fürs Foto bücken muss, sehe ich als Zeichen seiner Höflichkeit. Ein echter Kavalier, dieses Hörnchen, belohnt mit Nuss und sehr gelungenem Portrait, an dem wir alle große Freude haben.
Und jetzt hol' ich mir auch eine Walnuss, Du hast mir Appetit gemacht.
