This is an unusual and interesting fungi that I am not familiar with at all. I looked it up on the web and the majority of the images displayed a mushroom that appeared to be in the latter stage of growth. Your specimen actually looks much fresher and in better shape then the ones I saw.
As far as your photo, to me there seems to be a bit of a glare or graininess due to the very harsh lighting you had to deal with. Your focus is sharp, but trying to focus just on your subject (the fungi) is a little difficult. This is just my opinion, perhaps others will view it differently.
I tried a WS to see if I could cut down on the exposure, but I'm not sure it made much of a difference.
