NOME SCIENTIFICO: Herse convolvuli
SINONIMI: Agrius convolvuli L.
FAMIGLIA: SPHINGIDAE

Sphinx of the Convolvulus
It should be common, but I've never seen it before, new to me
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Herse convolvuli
SYNONYMS: Agrius convolvuli L.
FAMILY: SPHINGIDAE
The genus represented in Italy by about 20 species. These are large night butterflies with a large fusiform abdomen and narrow wings that close tightly on the body in the resting position. The sphingidae caterpillars are easily identifiable by a particular "horn" that rises above the abdomen.
It is a migratory species that spread, in the adult state, throughout the Palearctic region, in the months of August-September. In Italy present in June and then in August-September, with two generations.
The caterpillars live on bindweed plants from July to September. Adults feed on different species of flowers (Abutilon, Clerodendro, Bignonia, Etc.)
Characteristic is the long spiritromba that allows them to extract the nectar even inside flowers with deep corollas, hovering in flight in front of them with the agility of a hummingbird. In particular the spiritromba of this species is so long that the pupa has a specific protective sheath for it.

Ciao Silvio
Interesting moth, with curious pattern, which looks like a face.

Regards

Ciao Silvio

Bella sfinge con bei dettagli.
Grazie di avercela mostrata.

Buona giornata

Francesco

Hi Silvio,

The leaves are framing well the insect. The point of view is showing the details of the Sfinge del Convolvolo butterfly. The colors and the sharpness are very good.

Hi Silvio.
Great to visit TrekNature again and see your pictures!
Good picture of this sfinge. This one is also new to me!
Thank you for sharing it.
Un cordial saludo
José

Hi Silvio,
Another great shot from you, this time of a big moth. Wings are coloured like crust, the moth is really difficult to find when resting on wood! But on the greenery, the contrast is spectacular. Good photo with nice sunny colors and proper depth of field. Congratulations!
Kind regards from Ireland, László
