[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well the books state that if you wish to eat (Coprinus comatus) "Shaggy Inkcap" also known as "The lawyers Wig" then it is at this stage you should pick them, before they start to open let alone go black as in this one here . If you wish to try them then there appears to be a few things you should be very aware of.they have a nasty trick up their sleaves, although edible you must not in any curcumstances drink anything with Alcohol in it as they contain a chemical which reacts very badly with it,even a couple of days after eating. It contains a chemical related to the drug used in "Antabuse" that is used to treat alcoholics. You will feel very very sick and it will give you Heart palpitations, aparently even cosmetics with alcohol in will have the same effect, so although edible be VERY, VERY careful with this one.
this one is growing in one of the grass paddocks at work, unlike the large mature one seen here.
Taken early this morning before the rain set in yet again. The rain is giving us a realy good crop of fungus this year but is playing havoc with trying to get an image at all, think we will soon need under water cameras at this rate ;0))#. I tried some thing new for me to obtain this picture, I used an old sheet of aluminium as a reflector to light up the left side beause at this stage it was so white and bright on the right the left was was under exposing badly and the flash was blacking out the BG too much.
other adjustments
shadows and mainly highlights
crop to size
sharpen and fade back
save for web

I think this is an excellent job here Robert. Like the comp. including sky & tree for you BG. It's lit very well with great details. I enjoyed your notes with regard to the conditions & challenges of this particular shot. Well done!

Good shot! Interesting idea that reflector, I must admit I'm now shooting fungi almost 100% flash - the main problem, as you say, is the incessant rain. I'm paranoid about going out with two flashguns and a dSLR in this - not because of the potential for damage to the camera, more for the risk of electrocution to the photographer ;) I think your lighting experiment has paid off well here. Useful note as usual. Well captured :-D

Amazing I love your referances, well done!

I love it when you post the strange ones. And this one is just that. Well done on the exposure. Super note.

Robert, very good photo of this beautie. I think comatus does not have any problems with alcohol, in fact I DARE every year (not this year jet) with a good rioja wine and a cup of home made coffee liquor (50º) and there is no problem at all.
For my taste, this is by far the best mushroom!!!

Good stuff Robb! You've made Mr Shaggy look quite grand and imposing. As for eating, apart from feild mushrooms,I've only eaten Amanita muscaria and various Psilocybe species. They seem to have strange after effects too!

i think i'll skip thos dinner...
nice shot, excelent details and nice colours!
compo is good to.congrats.

I am careful of everything to do with lawyers!! The exposure on this shot is superb and I like the setting too.

Thanks for posting

Very nice job Rob, The composition is very good and the texture of the inkcap is excellent. Good note too.

Well, Robert, the picture is interesting enough to lure any viewer on board (because of the peculiar shape), but the note really does it. Is this what they extract the chemical in Antabus from? In Denmark it is used a lot in treating alcoholics who want to stop the hard way. I really feel I have learned something today. Thank you for that.

Eccezionale!! Bravissimo!! Immagine interessantissima di Coprinus comatus, questo sì che si può mangiare!!!

This one looks like something Obelix has hammered out of the rocks ;-). Great angle to making it look even bigger. Reading you note I think I will stick to the wine and leave these for the AA's.
