Large Wall Brown - Lasiommata maera

This was taken on the island of Rhodes, Greece earlier this year at the site of the acropolis at Monte Smith.

Its perched on one of the ancient walls, I couldn't get a shot with the wings open but actually I think I prefer the patterning on the underside.

It is found across most of Europe except the British Isles and the extreme north of Scandinavia. Usually it flies close to rock faces or amongst boulders where it rests to gain heat from the sun and from the rock itself. Here the grey underside markings camouflage it well.

Family: Satyridae

Flight Time: April - September

Size: 44-56mm

Altitude: 0-2000m

Matt:
Very nice - the "flat" lighting has really brought out the subtle tones. A tiny bit more DOF would have been nice if possible, but I'd still be happy with this one!
Regards, Nigel.
