Fruit Chafer (Pachnoda sinuate)

Family: Scarabaeidae; Cetoniini, sometimes also called Rose Chafers.

This is my third post on these critters and you could think that I actually like them. I don’t. They are just colourful and are found in abundance in my garden. They are a pest. Now that the fruit trees have fruit and the roses started to bloom they flourish. I will have to take some drastic measures thought as their numbers are really souring.

I do not know what their natural enemies are since the birds seem to leave them alone. Like all of the scarab family they have a very hard protective shell. And I believe the bright colours helps in a way.

One thing that counts in their favour is that they fly relatively slow. That makes them an excellent specimen to try and get in flight. So with them in abundance I set out to get one in flight.

There are some bright spots on the critter but it’s my nicest shot of it. I took about 100 in flight shots. My strike rate was not very good. Even at 1/1600 the wings are still blurred, I guess they have to, to keep those armoured plated body in the air.

Thanks for looking.

Brilliant. You guys never fail to amaze me. My limited knowledge of photography and the quality of what I capture makes me jealous.
Skitterend gerhardt.

Perfection in every inch! Gerhard, my big congratulations!!! Absolutely stunning action-picture.

Excellent Gerhardt!Do these things fly real slow or are you just super fast? 110%

le tire est parfais !
la photo est tres belle, et je me demande comment c'est possible de prendre un insecte en vole avec autant de precision......
bon travail.

Amazing shot... one of the nicest things about digital is that you can shoot and shoot then shoot again with no cost worries.

What a fun image this is. Love the motion blur of the wings and that body...it is quite comical to see that fat body inflight...wonderful photo, Gerhard.

What a capture!
Excellent and very sharp with great motion blur of the wings.
Fabulous,well done.

Great shot! You must have the patience of a saint to get these in flight shots... Technically it's impressive, the DOF is good and the focus is spot on - I'm surprised that the wings still blurred at 1/1600th, but then I suppose I shouldn't be - I spent a couple of hours trying to freeze butterfly flight earlier in the year, and they were still mushy at 1/1000th. Two things I'd probably change though, firstly I'd give a little more USM there's detail here that isn't being pulled out as well as it could, and secondly I feel there's a marginally yellow cast - neither are significant though! An impressive capture, and useful note too :-D

Amazing how fast those wings go, 1/1600 of a second can't freeze the movement. Great shot.

You left the part about the bombs out. Very well captured. What I would have liked to capture, is you taking these 100 shot. Get your wive a video camera to capture some home movies.

You managed to get excellent sharpness a datail in this difficult shot.

Thanks for posting

This is excellent Gerhard!
I think it looks good when the wings are blurred. It makes a dinamic feeling.
Very, very nice job!

This is amazing!! So many colours in nature and we are not fortunate enough to see them all.
Thanks for the detail you posted, I now have homework to do. How did you manage to focus on this moving target, or was it the 100th one that did the thing?

Wowwwwww, great shot. It is the best flight shot i have ever seen. Beautiful details and colors.

The chance comes to those which are in state to receive it and you were ready, Gerhard. Then it give you a smile.
When the next one? :) TFS.

This is wonderful!!!! Beautiful, and wonderful to see in flight!

This is a very good photograph. Don't worry about the wings being blurred by movement; I think it looks better then if you would have managed to freeze them. This looks more natural. Also the contrast between the movement and the focussed body make it a very dynamic and exciting image. Thumbs up!

What can I say, this is marvelous, wish it was mine.

Waouw Génial ! Cette prise en plein vol est impressionnante !!! Bravo !
