[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I named this photo as a tribute to Pieter's movie line theme. If you build it, he will come is from Field of Dreams (1989) starring Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer who hears voices: if he builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield, something will happen. Sure enough, the ghosts of dead legendary players are playing right before him, proving that baseball was great when money wasn't a factor, and that people once played for the sheer thrill of the game.

I took this photo at a huge park near my home. Piedmont Park was built for the International Exposition in the late 1800s and has attracted large crowds ever since. The autumn color has finally arrived and I took a long walk around the lake. I liked this image of the weeping willow overlying the fall colors which were reflected in the lake.
In 1887, the Gentlemen’s Driving Club purchased 189 acres of land from Benjamin Walker to establish an exclusive club and racing ground for horse enthusiasts. Many expositions and fairs were held at Piedmont Park during the next seventeen years, most notably the Piedmont Exposition of 1887 and the Cotton States and International Exposition of 1895. While the Piedmont Exposition was regional, the Cotton States and International Exposition was a World’s Fair. It ran for 100 days, featured 6,000 exhibits and attracted 800,000 visitors.

A small lake was created from a spring that flowed into the park near today’s Visitor Center for the exposition in 1887. In 1895, the lake was enlarged to approximately its current size of 11.5-acres and named Clara Meer. This is pictured here.

On June 15, 1904 the city of Atlanta bought Piedmont Park. In 1909, the City elected to transform the decaying fairgrounds into a park and enlisted Olmsted Brothers, pre-eminent landscape architects of the time, (and sons of Frederick Law Olmsted who designed Central Park in New York City), to develop a master plan for the park. Due to budget limitations, their plan for Piedmont Park was not fully implemented. Nevertheless, the Olmsted Brothers’ 1912 plan greatly influenced the development of Piedmont Park. In fact, the current master plan, adopted by the City of Atlanta and Piedmont Park Conservancy in 1995, honors the brothers’ original vision for the park.

Any advice on how to meter this shot would be greatly appreciated. My camera is basically a point and shoot Olympus and I often overexpose combination shots like this. I think you can increase the F-stop to compensate, but are there any other tricks?

Hi Anna,

Beautiful capture and well done on the composition.
It's cccccccold here, we had 55 mile an hour winds and I saw my first snowflake today. Ouch!!!!
Meter in this case, the green in the water near the bank. It's the midtone, Grey, which there is none in this image, you are after when metering. So, the green in the water is a good midtone.
This is well exposed, good for you.

GREAT LANDSCAPE ALLI !

I love these trees, we call them (sole pleureur in french and I can't translate sole but pleureur mean crying).
Composition is very nice, I like the foreground tree and reflections looks very good. Picture could be a little bit darker for the BG, but then FG will be too dark. So I guess you made the best compromise to preserve details all over.

Hi Alli, a great shot. I love the bands of colour. The lighting is terrific too. I think it could do with a little rotation anti-clockwise but apart from that it is a very handsome shot. Well done.
