Whananaki Coastal Walkway:

I want to get off Whananaki, so this is my last shot of this beach. This is Whananaki SOUTH and there is a walking track covering most of this coastal walkway that follows a well-graded farm track between Whananaki South to Sandy Bay southwards. There are excellent views and access to the seashore at Sheltered Bay. In places the walkway passes close to private houses. Walkers are asked to respect residents’ privacy. The walkway is 5 km (3 hours one way)

Whananaki North and Whananaki South are separated by a river of the same name. The two settlements are linked by a very long, but very convenient wooden pedestrian footbridge which provided a convenient platform for several local fishermen and women. Cars must drive some distance inland (by memory it was about 8 kms by road to get from Whananaki North to Whananaki South), both of which sit on the coast, while walkers just cross this half-kilometre-long one-metre-wide causeway over the Whananaki Inlet.

Location: On the east coast, north-east of Whangarei. Access is off State Highway 1 north of Whangarei via the Whananaki South Road. Matapouri Road branches off to provide access to the southern end of the walkway.
