[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I took this Protea which is part of the Cylindrical Pincushions – Leucospermum family, more specific the Wart-stemmed Pincushion - Leucospermum cuneiforme in the Somerset West nature reserve.

Proteas are a major part of the Fynbos in the Cape province and I previously posted a series over several posts covering this unique plant kingdom.


Habit: A shrub up to 3m tall
Fire survival: Resprouts from underground bole
Sexual system: Both sexes in each flower
Flowers: All year round, peaking August - February
Pollinator: Birds
Fruit: Released 2 months after flowering
Seed dispersal: Ants
Seed storage: Underground in ants nests
Rarity status: Not threatened, locally common
Habitat: Varied, 0-1200m
Distribution: Riviersonderend Mountains, Langeberg, Outeniqua to Qolora in the Eastern Cape, Potberg

This Protea family is fascinating Japie. Some of the Australian Banksia actually rely on fire to reproduce...the seeds aren't released until the 'cones' (or whatever they're called) are burned by fire.I saw a demonstration of this with a blowtorch once.
I can see the resemblance to my Rewarewa flower,the red with yellow tips.These are a popular garden plant around here too.(I planted one, but my garden was too wet and it died). Thanks for this,and well done.

Hallo Japie, dit zijn prachtige bloemen, hier noemt men dit een "flessentrekker" in de bloemisterij, de kleur inval is zeer mooi, de rode en gele tinten maken uw foto zeer mooi, my compliments Japie!
