My wife and I were having breakfast next to the Kwai Rivier in Botswana when this bull elephant appeared from out of the bush and passed within about 15 m of us. Of course we sat quiet like scared little mice as we dared not move. Elphant that are alarmed may either run of attack and we did not feel like gambling on that day. I did take some photographs though as he went into the water taking a quick drink before turning his back on the rather amused looking birds on the little island in the river.
The funny thing is that although we sat quietly - may camera sounded like an alarm going off to me - a friend from Cape Town called me on my long distance radio just as this bull turned around. He immediately took notice, shook his head violently in our direction, gave a few paces towards us, but by then I had (with the Land Rover between us) switched the radio off. The tight moment lasted for about 5 seconds, but since the wind was blowing from him to us he could not smell us and elephants cannot see too well either, so by just keeping quiet and sitting still (outside the Land Rover) he lost interest and walked on to a bearbu tree-stump and started scrathing himself. When we saw his friend ariving soon afterwards we decided to quickly pack things away, so we had a breakfast on the go with cold frankfurters and water.

Wow, how nice looks on green! Most african posts I've seen here have a reddish-yellow dry vegetation on BG.

Regards, Petru

Hi Nico,
Outstanding photograph! Everything about is superb. Your note with this just sounds like experiences I have only dreamed about. My dream vacation is a photo trip to Africa. Thanks for making my day!

Nico
A very clean and interesting shot. Almost everything in the picture is so perfectly done (Light, composition, the moment- water still flowing down its mouth), it makes the viewer to feel part of the image. Your note gives that extra value addition to the picture. My only regret is that, the birds who play a rather significant role in the picture should have come fully inside the frame.
Thanks for sharing
Gopi

A superb shot, Nico. It is very rare to see a shot of an elephant in the wild at such close range and in a frontal view at that. The details are amazing and the water from his mouth adds a nice touch. The backdrop really gives the sense of his natural environment. Your excellent notes contribute to the feeling of drama. Excellent work and TFS. : )
Sorry about your cold breakfast... but definitely worth it!!!

Indeed wow, what size and what force these great animals have, but you know whats funny are the birds in the background. They look like they are waiting for something to happen.
Great shot anyway well done.

Nico,
Quite an intriguing story to go along with this excellent photo. I like the water on this big guy's face and dripping from his mouth. I also really enjoy the audience of rather amused looking birds watching the big bull elephant.
I wish the picture went a little farther to the right so that we could see clearly where the audience of birds ends... Oh well, such a minor nit.
Great shot!
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Nico,
it's marvelous, this majestic elephant in this wonderful bush, I love the trees and the clouds, the colours are marvelous.
The birds are a little funny, seems they are watching what the elephant is doing.
A lovely shot, thank you very much, bye

Hi Nico, lovely shot. The colours and pose of the elephant are superb. I do have a reservation about the composition. I find my eye is taken to the whistling ducks on the right hand side and not to the elephants face where I feel it should be. But, it's a lovely shot. Well done.

Good clear shot. Well done Nico.

This is a superb shot. Everything is perfect in this photo. Well done.

This is an awesome shot, I like it because if give you 2 real good reason, one for the magnificant animal and then the scenery. Well done Nico. I would like to visit Botswana someday. :)
